Tips to Boosting Your Child’s Immune System

Must read

Parents are usually prepared to having children contracting colds, bugs, or even recurrent flus when they are at school since they are constantly exposed to other school kids who may be a carrier of these viruses. But how come some kids don’t get sick?

You may say that your genes are playing a part on how susceptible your child is to these infections because you were just like them when you were a kid, but rather than taking your child’s illness in stride, why not take steps to actually boost his or her immune system instead?

How to Boost Your Child’s Immune System?

Your child’s immune system is the one that helps protect them from various diseases, and although your genes can play a part on its overall health, there are steps that can be taken to help boost your kid’s immune system. Here are a few that are worth mentioning.

Promote a healthy diet

Your child’s immune system can be weakened because of the kind of diet that they are following. If their choice of food revolves around fast-food, sweets, or others that are filled with preservatives, additives, and sugar, then there is a huge chance that you are already compromising their immune system. A better approach here is to start your kid with the right diet while he or she is still young. Introduce more greens and fruits, whole grains, and even lean meat.

Teach them proper handwashing

Children can’t be bothered to wash their hands when they are out and about, but this is one habit that you need to enforce on them so that they will be doing it out of habit. Teach them that they should wash their hands with soap and water after using the bathroom or sanitize their hands when they sneeze or cough to avoid transferring the virus to someone else. Something simple as washing one’s hands can reduce spreading illnesses.

Reduce stress and anxiety

Adults aren’t the only ones who experience stress. Children do too. Their schoolwork and activities, their interaction with other children, and the environment at home can all contribute to their stress levels.  You may think that your kids will not get stressed, but they can and this can contribute to their weakened immune system. If you want to protect your child from getting sick frequently, you should take steps to help ease their anxiety and stress. Go out in the park and play or do something as a family. It is important that you make this a habit as your child will be more inclined to talk to you about his or her day which can lessen the stress that he feels.

Prioritize sleep

It is understandable that you want to push your child to excel in school, but if this means that they are missing out on their much-needed sleep, you are putting your child at risk of low immune system. Children need up to 10 hours of undisturbed sleep as much as possible since they are still in the developing stage. If your child is having difficulty sleeping, you should start a bedtime routine or ritual that will help them go into a calm and relaxed stage so that they will be able to sleep on time. When your child is getting enough sleep, their immune system will be working efficiently.
