Acne, also called acne vulgaris, refers to a chronic skin disease that results from clogging of the hair follicles with oil and dead skin cells. Since the skin’s appearance is usually not pleasing, it may lead to self-consciousness, anxiety, reduced confidence, and depression or suicidal ideations.

Causes

Acne has several causes, according to Mayo Clinic. As per the publication, four factors result to acne and they are oil production, dead skin cells, bacteria, and clogged pores. The physiology is that when the body produces too much sebum and dead skin cells, they accumulate in the hair follicles and form a soft plug that serves as a thriving environment for bacteria. So, when the bacteria infects the clogged pore, it will become inflamed. Also, hormones, medications, and diet are some factors that may aggravate the condition.

Signs and Symptoms

A person with acne has the following signs and symptoms: blackheads, whiteheads, papules, pustules (called pimples), cysts, nodules, dark spots, scars, depression, and low-self-esteem, as per the American Academy of Dermatology. According to the publication, they appear on the neck, chest, shoulders, upper arms, back, and buttocks.

Home Remedies

While medications can be applied to the skin areas with acne, home remedies are also available as supplemental treatment for the condition.

Tea Tree Oil

One remedy for acne is tea tree oil. Five percent solution of the oil is less harsh than five percent benzoyl peroxide solution, in addition to its ability to clear up acne. To prepare, tea tree oil is mixed with witch hazel. Then, a cotton swab is used to apply the resulting solution to the affected area. The remedy can be used up to two times a day, since using it more than recommended could lead to drying of the skin and worsening of the acne.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar stands as another remedy for acne. According to Everyday Roots, apple cider vinegar is capable of killing the bacteria that infected the clogged pore. The vinegar also converts into alkaline, helping maintain the skin pH and make it harder for the bacteria to survive. The vinegar also has astringent properties, such as lemon juice. This way, it helps dry excess oil, preventing the growth of more pimples. However, its use should not be abused, since it will dry the skin. When the skin is dry the sebaceous or oil glands will compensate and overproduce oil or sebum, which may result to an outbreak.

To perform, as per the publication, the person washes his face with water and pats it dry. Then, he dips a cotton ball to a 1:3 vinegar-water solution and applies it directly on the affected area. The skin is left undried for ten minutes or overnight. The remedy can be reapplied several times a day, but the face should be washed thoroughly after each time. A moisturizer can also be applied if the skin is getting dry.

Cinnamon and Honey

Cinnamon and honey can be combined to treat acne. According to Dr. Axe’s official website, both have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. To prepare, as per the publication, the person mixes half teaspoon of cinnamon and two tablespoons of raw honey, along with a teaspoon of coconut oil. Then, the resulting mixture is applied on the face. It is left on for five to ten minutes, before removing gently with damp cloth.

Acne reduces the comfort level and confidence of a person. Thus, way to manage it should be done, such as seeking medical consult for assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation.
