Our liver plays a role in our digestive system where it is responsible not only for digesting food but also for flushing out any toxins that are lingering in your body. However, a sluggish liver, also known as liver congestion can be detrimental to our health since it means that our body is having a hard time dealing with the amount of toxic substances in the body. There are many factors that can cause liver problems in the first place such as viruses, over consumption of alcoholic beverages, and even genetics can play a part in your liver’s condition. How will you know if your liver is congested? Here are a few signs that are sure to crop up that you should pay attention to.

Difficulty sleeping or disrupted sleep

Those with liver problems often find it difficult falling and staying asleep at night hence they are always sleepy the following day. This can affect their health too as lack of sleep can lead to other health issues.

Inability to focus

Another sign that your liver is not functioning very well is that you find yourself unable to focus on the task on hand. One reason behind this is that the acid that is being produced in the liver tends to travel through the body and onto the brain which creates a fog. This makes it difficult for you to really get your brain working properly.

Hormonal imbalance

What other signs of liver congestion should you watch out for? Well, another possible sign that your liver is not working properly is hormonal imbalance. You might be experiencing mood swings, bloating, cravings, weight gain, and the like which are signs that your hormones are out of whack. Although these are normal during menstrual period in women, they can also mean that your liver is not working 100% and may be in need of detoxification.

Reduce absorption of nutrients

Eating healthy is all well and good, but when your body is not absorbing the nutritional content of your food, then your liver may be compromised. If this is the case, you will need to start changing your diet in such a way that it will be easier for your liver to process them.

Abdominal pain

If your liver is not functioning as it should be, pain in your abdomen is sure to be felt. This sharp pain can be debilitating at times and can usually go away after a few minutes.
