Black eyes occurs when we experience excessive pressure on or around the eye. This usually ensues when get a blow to the face. Black eyes can cause swelling, headaches, pain and blurry vision. It can give off bruising around the eyes. It can cause the tissues around the eyes to have a bluish or dark hue. Black eyes can also occur with jaw surgery, allergic reaction, facelifts, nasal injuries, eyelid surgery and so on.

This can be embarrassing, painful and hard to cover up. Thankfully, black eyes are not considered a serious injury and can go away with simple home care. However, there really isn’t much you can do to get rid of it faster. You may help promote a safer and less visible healing.

The following remedies below can help improve the healing process of a black eye. However, if the skin around your eyes have scrapes or cuts consult your doctor. If you experience vomiting, nausea, dizziness and vision problems after you acquire your black eye go to the hospital.

Ice Pack

The first thing you have to perform is cold compress. Apply an ice pack on the affected area as soon as you sustain the injury. Ice will be able to help reduce the swelling of the tissue around the eye. The low temperature will also be able to reduce internal bleeding by constricting the blood vessel and reduce bruising. This will also help to speed up the healing process. You can wrap ice cubes in a clean muslin cloth or cotton fabric. Hold it over your eye for about 10 to 15 minutes. Repeat this process sever times a day for the next two days. Doing this will also help relieve the pain. Never use ice directly on the skin or rub an ice pack. The skin surrounding the eyes is very delicate. This may cause further bruising. Another great alternative is to use frozen vegetables or meat.

Warm Compress

After applying your cold compress, you need to apply warm compresses to the area. This will help improve the blood flow in the tissue around the eye and help speed up the healing process. You can dip a clean cloth in hot water. Squeeze out the excess water and apply the warm cloth on the eye and leave it to cool. Once it is cool repeat the process. DO this several times a day. If the skin around your eyes is not tender. Massage it lightly to improve the blood circulation under the skin.

Vitamin C

When you suffer from a black eye, it is important to eat a diet rich in vitamin C. Foods that are rich in vitamin C such as guavas, limes, lemons, mangos, oranges, broccoli, peppers, Indian gooseberries and grapefruit can help with the healing process. You can also use supplements to get your body’s daily dose.

Keep Your Head Elevated

Once you acquire your injury keep your head elevated, up until your injury heal keep it elevated. Lying down flat or keep your body level when you sleep or rest will decrease the blood flow. This will cause the blood to accumulate in the area and cause it to darken, making it appear worse. Keep your head elevated by sleeping or resting in chair. You can also use a pillow behind your head and neck to keep it elevated when you sleep.

Herbal Remedies

There are no actual remedies that can help cure black eye, but there can be topical remedies that can help improve healing. Arnica is an herb that can be bought in topical, oil or ointment. Apply this on your black eye to help reduce irritation. Another famous herb is witch hazel, it has a healing and soothing effect that can help improve damage skin. Extra virgin olive oil can also help reduce inflammation and swelling. Massage these natural remedies by gently on the skin three times a day.

Check for further damage in the eye by scanning the white portion of the eye and the iris. If you notice any blood in these areas, you could have injured your eye and may cause permanent damage. Schedule an appointment with an ophthalmologist to get to assess your situation. Always keep our black eye clean to prevent further infection.
