The Do’s of Deep Conditioning

Choose the right deep conditioner

Not all deep conditioning products are made the same which is why it is important that you find one that is appropriate for the type of hair that you have. A good rule of thumb to follow here is that the thicker and coarser your hair is, the heavier and creamier conditioner you should look for. On the other hand, if your hair is thin, go for light creams so they won’t make your hair hang limp.

Deep condition regularly

You should make it a point to deep condition your hair regularly. This means doing it at least once a week so that you will be able to keep your hair smooth, manageable, and less prone to breakage. You can start by doing this once a week but if your hair feels limp, do it every two or three weeks. Try and see which one works best for the kind of hair that you have.

Consider using hot oils

Not all deep conditioning products come in cream form because hot oils can also be used to deep condition your hair. These oils can nourish your hair from deep within thus helping them to become stronger. It also gives your hair protection against the environment so it won’t break easily. Usually hot oils are applied on damp hair before you shampoo. Leave it on for a minute then rinse and shampoo afterwards. You’ll see a noticeable improvement afterwards for sure.

The Don’ts of Deep Conditioning

Avoid overdoing your deep conditioning session

Some people leave on their deep conditioning cream more than an hour or two in the hopes that it will yield far better results. Unfortunately, this is not so. A better option would be to adhere to the standard 15 to 30 minutes to get the full benefits of the deep conditioner.

Don’t forget to read labels

If you are not a fan of reading labels, it is high time that you do so. There are many deep conditioning creams out there that may contain ingredients that are harsh on your scalp and hair. When used, they can make your hair feel dry and brittle in the long run.

Don’t multi-task

Avoid using deep conditioner as a leave-in conditioner or co-wash as it is designed for a different purpose. Leaving deep conditioner on for hours can leave a heavy residue on your scalp and hair that it might feel heavy afterwards.

These are just a few dos and don’ts that you might want to keep in mind the next time you think of using deep conditioner for your hair. By following these tips, you’ll find the effects of your deep conditioner to be better than ever.
